How are the hotels when booking through Gate 1 Travel in Ecuador?

Gate 1 Travel hand-picks its hotels to meet their standards to satisfy the needs and desires of its travelers. Each hotel is unique and portrays the particular characteristics of the country or region.

In our experience, we were blown away by the hotels we stayed at while traveling through Ecuador. Each hotel was chosen because of its location, quality, and character.

While in Quito, we stayed at the Hilton Colón, and the beds were extremely comfortable.

Our next stop was in Otavalo, where we stayed at Puertolago Country Inn, a beautiful hotel overlooking the San Pablo Lake at the foot of a volcano. The views were outstanding. This hotel also provided many unique details and touches.

Following Otavalo, we stayed at the Termas de Papallacta Resort and Spa. This hotel was unique, to say the least. Within a few steps from the door of your room, you could be immersed in volcanic water hot springs.

Then, we started our trip towards the Amazon, where we stayed at la Casa del Suizo. This tourist-class lodge is located in the Ecuadorian Amazon in a lush tropical and tranquil setting on the banks of the Napo River.

Our last hotel was in Patate. Hacienda Leito was picturesque and unique in many ways. The rooms had a fireplace, and the setting was magical.

What is transportation on Gate 1 Travel in Ecuador?

Gate 1 Travel provides motor coach buses to transport people from location to location. The drivers are incredibly experienced and professional. They make you feel safe even when driving next to a massive cliff or super tight spots in city centers.

During our trip to Ecuador, our driver, Roque, impressed us with his incredible navigation skills through the smallest allies and tiniest roads that looked like they could only fit a bike. Roque was able to fit an entire bus that carried 40 people.

Our driver also kept the bus clean, helped sanitize our hands upon re-entry to the bus, provided water, and was super friendly and made you feel welcome.

What are meals like with Gate 1 Travel in Ecuador?

Gate 1 Travel provides many high-quality meals when you take one of their tours.

Breakfast generally takes place at the hotel you are staying in, and it could be buffet style or served as individual plates. Options may vary from country to county and hotel to hotel.

In our experience, the buffets were fabulous for breakfast as they provided various options, allowing us to eat comfort foods while also trying some exotic choices of the region. Coffee, tea, and other beverages were always available. We enjoyed delicious fresh fruit juices at every hotel during our last trip with Gate 1 to Ecuador.

Lunch. Some lunches are included with your Gate 1 tour, but sometimes you may also have the opportunity to try something at a local restaurant. Your tour guide will provide some on-point recommendations of places they like. We were satisfied with our tour guide choices.

The lunches that Gate 1 provided were served at beautiful restaurants throughout the country. Gate 1 took the time to carefully vet every restaurant to provide tasty and high-quality lunches for all participants.

When we visited Ecuador with Gate 1, we were given choices on the days lunch was included. We found this very helpful because our tour group had different dietary restrictions such as vegetarianism, no fish, only chicken, multiple allergies, etc. Gate 1 was able to accommodate all of these needs.

Dinner. Most dinners are included in your Gate 1 tour.

When we visited Ecuador, only the first day’s dinner was not included because this was an arrival day, and part of the group didn’t arrive until after dinner. From then on, dinners were served at the hotel we were staying at. Remember that the hotels look out of a storybook, so the delicious food and setting provided a fantastic dining experience. We were also offered choices for dinner to accommodate all tastes and preferences. We found a variety of foods that included known dishes as well as local specialties.

During our trip to Ecuador, we also were provided many “technical stops” to allow people to use public restrooms and buy snacks at gas stations, local markets, and street stands. In addition, our tour guide provided a little treat most days for us to taste local specialties.

What are activities like with Gate 1 Travel in Ecuador?

A wonderful thing about Gate 1 Travel is that most activities are already included in the itinerary and price. In addition, you can also add some optional tours and activities depending on your wants, needs, and interests.

During our trip to Ecuador, we explored the center of Quito while learning about the history and tasting local treats. We also strolled through the Plaza San Franciso, enjoyed coffee, watched the performers and vendors, and ran after doves and pigeons.

Afterward, we visited the Middle of the World Monument, located at a latitude of 0º, and stood with one foot in the Northern and one in the Southern Hemisphere.

The following morning we visited Peguche, known for its beautiful waterfall. Then, we took a tour of the market in Otavalo, one of the largest in South America, run by the local Otavaleños. Here, we enjoyed the lively market atmosphere and browsed the various stalls for traditional goods such as handwoven cloth and rugs, jewelry, and more. In the afternoon, we transferred to Papallacta in the Andes Mountains. We explored the hot springs for the remainder of the day and joined the optional tour to Papallacta’s spas for a neck and back massage.

After breakfast, we transferred by bus to La Punta Ahuano on the Napo River, where we boarded a canoe that took us to our Amazon lodge. In the afternoon, we visited Ahuano and a local Quechua community interpretation center to learn about their way of life firsthand.

The following morning, after a canoe ride, we hiked in the Misicocha Private Nature Reserve for approximately two hours while viewing the beautiful flora and fauna up close. We enjoyed the views as we crossed suspended bridges and flew through the jungle on a short zip line basket ride. At the end of the hike, we took a rafting trip on a traditional balsa log raft. Later we choose to participate in one of the optional tours, Canopy Adventure Park.

The next day in the morning, we boarded a canoe for a short trip to La Punta Ahuano, continuing by coach to Patate. We stopped to visit the mighty El Pailon del Diablo, or “The Devil’s Cauldron,” one of Ecuador’s most beautiful waterfalls. We then drove to Baños, an idyllic little town known for its hot thermal baths and the sometimes steamy Tungurahua Volcano. We enjoyed lunch at a local restaurant. During our trip to Ecuador, we traveled with our 11-year-old son. He was the group’s only child but thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The long bus rides sometimes allowed him to catch up on sleep or relax before the next activity. We found this to be very helpful. The itinerary for Ecuador was very packed, and he felt something was going on constantly. The choices in food were perfect for him, and the variety of activities kept him happily engaged.

Remember that you will be sharing a coach bus with fellow travelers, so children need to be prepared and know how to behave with other adults.

Most days had early wake-ups but also early bedtimes, allowing us to get plenty of sleep and avoid moody moments due to lack of rest.

Is Gate 1 Travel for solo travelers going to Ecuador?

Gate 1 Travel is a perfect way for solo travelers to meet like-minded individuals while exploring the world.

During our last Gate 1 trip to Ecuador, several solo and experienced Gate 1 travelers had many more planned trips.

Is Gate 1 Travel good for seniors traveling to Ecuador?

Yes! Gate 1 Travel is great for seniors!

What to pack for a Gate 1 Trip to Ecuador?

What to pack for your Gate 1 Trip will depend on the location you are visiting. Some suggestions include sunscreen, bug spray, sunglasses, raincoats, comfortable shoes, etc.

During our trip to Ecuador, we appreciated having packed our hiking boots, easy dry pants for the Amazon, layers for the change in altitude, a bathing suit for the Amazon, a hat for the intense sun, sunglasses, and a raincoat for unexpected rain.

What to wear for a Gate 1 Trip to Ecuador?

If you are doing the 8-Day Classic Ecuador and Amazon Adventure with Gate 1 Travel, you will want to pack a variety of clothes. In high altitude cities like Quito, Otavalo, Papallacta and Patate you will need warm clothes. I mostly wore Lula Roe leggings or workout pants with layers on top, socks, and my hiking boots. It basically became my uniform. My husband and son mostly wore jeans or sporty pants with layers on top, socks, and hiking boots.

Some days were freezing in the morning, and a heavy jacket was a nice touch.

The weather in the Amazon was hot and humid. We spent a lot of time in the pool so bringing a bathing suit is essential. For hiking, I wore shorts, a T-shirt, a hat, and the boots provided by the hotel. * Tip/Hint: Pack long socks for the two days in the Amazon. You will have to wear rubber boots provided by the hotel. Long socks will come in handy and will help you prevent blisters.

Are the hotels air-conditioned with Gate 1 Travel  in Ecuador?

During our trip to Ecuador, only our hotel in Quito (the capital) had AC. Having said that, a lot of hotels in South America do not have air conditioning. Remember that we stayed at hotels at the top of the mountains and in the middle of the Amazon rainforest. None of them had AC; however, they all had a fireplace to keep us warm, hot water bags in the bed, or fans to keep us cool. In the Amazon, the hotels had screened rooms preventing bugs from getting in.

All in all, we slept wonderfully every single night of the trip.
